Structural Changes in Banking by Russ Winter, Saturday, November 29, 2008, in Russ Winter | Permalink |Comments Off   The H3 data from the Fed gives some startling evidence as to the degree of financial deleveraging that occurred during the Panic. Without doubt banks and lenders must have sold a boatload of securities at what were probably distressed prices during this period. To the Fed? To vultures? And for what purpose? to prepare for [...] To discuss this, or any issues pertaining to the economy and the financial markets, visit our new forum. Unintended Consequences by Lee Adler, Friday, November 28, 2008, in Economics | Permalink |Comments (6)   This post was by Trader Joe on yesterday’s Stool Pigeons Wire. One of the consequences of the “CRASH” in the high-yield debt market is that corporate treasurers have finally woken up and realized that they can tender for their debt from desperate institutional holders for pennies on the dollar. This can provide a TREMENDOUS BENEFIT for companies to recapitalize the firm by extinguishing debt and thus delevering the firm.Examples are beginning to pop up all over the place….Metaldyne, Station Casinos, Level 3 Communications, US Frieghtways, etc etc etc.The economic benefit of this action may be substantial for some or many firms. An example may be helpful….Say Company XYZ has $100,000,000 of 8.75% debt due in 2016 now trading at 20 cents on the dollar. Desperate institutional holders may be happy to GTFON at say 25 cents on the dollar. The company would typically have an IB contact large holders and solicit their interest first before making the tender. Thus the company will go out and issue new debt with a $25,000,000 face or use current cash if available or tap a line of credit for the “refi”The result from an accounting point of view is a $75,000,000 windfall to the firm because they retired $100,000,000 using $25,000,000.Look for this trend to really take off and for many many firms to reap HUGE benefits as a result. This has the potential to be more significant than any of the various alphabet Treasury/Fed crap done to date. Structural Changes in the Markets by Russ Winter, Friday, November 28, 2008, in Russ Winter | Permalink |Comments Off   As one might expect there have been some structural changes in the underpinning of the markets. The indications are that an historic number of participants have paniced, have economic collapse or severe depression expectations, and are sitting in cash.First most of the analysts have capitulated. This ties in with the possibility that the 4th quarter [...] To discuss this, or any issues pertaining to the economy and the financial markets, visit our new forum. Happy Thanksgiving Market - Professional Edition by Lee Adler, Wednesday, November 26, 2008, in Today's Markets | Permalink |Comments (1)   The bulls get the turkey now, and its beginning to look like they will get it for Christmas too. Seems like every day in this market we get the improbable, even the unthinkable to occur. Today it was more record upside readings in our cycle indicators. Fed Forced to Act to Stop Housing Collapse - Professional Edition by Lee Adler, Wednesday, November 26, 2008, in Money and The Fed, Professional Edition | Permalink |Comments (0)   The Mortgage Applications index dropped to its lowest point in 8 years at the end of October. As of the week ended November 21 it had barely budged off that level. The bailout of Fannie and Freddie last summer had the opposite effect of what was hoped for, as spreads on Fannie and Freddie paper widened dramatically versus Treasuries, pushing mortgage rates higher. I have warned in the Fed Report for several years that when the foreign central banks ended their subsidies for GSE paper, it would have a catastrophic impact on the US housing market. It has, and now the Fed has been forced to step in to the breach. Click here to download complete report in pdf format (Professional Edition Subscribers). Fed Report by Lee Adler, Wednesday, November 26, 2008, in Money and The Fed | Permalink |Comments (0)   There were no Treasury auctions today. The Treasury announced next week’s 13 and 26 week bill auctions today, a day earlier than usual due to the holiday. Both will be for $28 billion. Both are $1 billion more than the TBAC estimate made on October 31. Both are $1 billion more than the amounts expiring and thus will raise $2 billion in new cash. The indirect bid last week was $7.2 billion on the 13 week bill and $10 billion on the 26 week. Anything less than those numbers at next week’s auctions could be early warning signs of trouble brewing. Numbers equal to or greater than that would indicate that the panic into Treasuries is as strong as ever.
