Demutualisation Watch
Two Global 300 co-operatives in Switzerland - Migros and Coop have been advised to demutualise.
The advice comes from the Chairman of the Competition Commission (COMCO), Walter Stoffel. Stoffel argues that the co-operative form is not the most appropriate for the two Swiss giants of retailing."Coop and Migros, by their size, moved away from the idea of the co-operative to the point that this idea has become unrecognizable, " claims Stoffel in an interview with the magazine Balance, Edition 23 April 2008. "Migros and Coop do not feel the pressure from shareholders because they have not."

In New Zealand, 22% of the gross domestic product (GDP) is generated by co-operative enterprise. Co-operatives are responsible for 95% of the dairy market and 95% of the export dairy market. They hold 70% of the meat market, 50% of the farm supply market, 70% of the fertiliser market, 75% of the wholesale pharmaceuticals, and 62% of the grocery market. Nearly 300 delegates met in Rome to discuss and decide on a series of restructuring proposals, changes to the ICA Rules. They adopted all recommendations included in the ICA Restructuring Report as proposed and unanimously approved new and amended ICA Rules and By-Laws which include a new subscription and voting system. Members further unanimously elected Mr. Won-Byung Choi of the National Agricultural Co-operative Federation of Korea (NACF) to the ICA Board.The text of the new ICA Rules and Bye-Laws are now available. ICA Director-General, Iain Macdonald, addressed the conference on two occasions. On 11 June he underlined the important role of co-operatives in promoting employment and reducing poverty in rural areas - a focus on this year's ILO Conference - and on 12 June he reminded delegates of the contribution that co-operatives make to closing the employment gap around the world. ICA commended the continuing work of the ILO in assisting constituencies in implementing ILO's Recommendation 193 on the Promotion of Co-operatives and hoped, that as part of a stroner ILO, it will strengthen its activity in all its departments in ensuring that policy environment exist which enable co-operatives to grow and prosper along side other forms of enterprise. The DG noted that ICA is committed to working with the ILO to strengthen the potential of co-operatives to contribute to advance people's real development goals and achieve a fair globalisation. One outcome of the Forum was a resolution reaffirming members' commitment to support ICA Africa. The meeting proposed a line of action and consultation that will form the basis of the new four-year strategy plan that will be submitted to the Regional Assembly for Africa for adoption.  Boletín de la ACI Febrero/Marzo 2008 Este Boletín tiene un decidido sentimiento australiano. Cubrimos la visita del miembro de la Junta de la ACI, Gun- Britt Mårtensson a mi ciudad natal, Sydney. Una de las cosas que claramente se destaca de nuestros reportes de su visita es el verdadero valor que el movimiento australiano ve en la membresía de la ACI. En nuestra entrevista especial, Trent Bartlett expone un punto sobre haber asistido a la Asamblea General de la ACI del 2005 — “el impacto de ver tantas personas de tantos países y escucharlos a todos hablar sobre cooperativas de una forma tan apasionante y positiva, realmente me impactó”. The Global 300 list is the second ranking of the largest co-operatives and mutual businesses in the world. The first preliminary listing of the largest 300 co-operatives and mutual businesses was released by the ICA at the Forum for a Responsible Globalisation in Lyon, france in October 2007. The 2007 list has expanded the range of data collected and the depth of analysis. Revenue was used as the criteria for selection and ranking. US currency was used with local currencies converted into USD. Full Story Visit Site Printer Version The Global 300 and Corporate Social Responsibility Published 10/23/2007 GA 07  The Global 300 Project has been enhanced by the International Co-operative Alliance this year by the release of a separate and complementary report of Corporate (or rather Co-operative) Sociaql Responsibility principles and their practice by co-operatives. Co-operative principles in particular the ICA's Statement of Co-operative Identity are the basis for most co-operative operation throughout the world.Some of the best examples of CSR performance are to be found among Global 300 co-operatives and mutuals. The report provides detailed case study examples of current practice across the various CSR streams - giving the flavour of what some co-operatives are currently doing.It is not an exhaustive sample of all that the co-operative is doing. Over the past seven years CIC Insurance has recorded an average growth of 37% compared to the industry rate of less than 11% in 2005.
