Have you noticed the subtle Fall changes in the air? Temperatures have been much cooler this week and we’re seeing a little color change here and there in some of our area fields. Harvest season is fast approaching. Please keep “Safety First” on the top of your list of priorities as you prepare for the season ahead.
Grain
Corn crop ratings were down 3% this week and soybeans down 4%
USDA September crop report will be released a week from today. Informa estimates were released this morning. Those estimates are 156.5 bpa for corn and 41.4 bpa for beans. FCStone’s September yield estimates were released this past Tuesday. Those corn estimates are 153.4 bu per acre down 1.1 bpa from their August number and 1.6 bpa below USDA's August estimate. The soybeans estimateis 41 bps. USDA will likely rely on some type of “historical average” and ear weight in the September report given lack of maturity. Heavy stand counts and the lack of maturity could once again find USDA corn production higher than the industry. The October harvest data will tell the whole story.

It’s no secret that fertilizer prices are increasing astronomically. Soil testing is one of the first and most economical options you will have before making your fertilizer choices for the 2009 crop season.
Crickets, spiders and other late Summer/Fall insect pests are here. Don’t forget the “Tempo SC Ultra” or its generic “Demon WP”. This product is recommended for all inside/outside insect control needs. As with this and all insecticide products we do strongly suggest you read and follow all package directions and “Think Safety First”
Petroleum
Early indications point to the petroleum supply fairing much better after Hurricane Gustav than after the Katrina/Rita Hurricanes in 2005. However, damage assessments are not complete, power must be restored, and restarting the petroleum system takes some time.
Prospects for improved oil market fundamentals over the next 18 months point to an easing in the market balance and price weakness over the near term. Supply risks in Iraq, Nigeria, and Iran, as well as threats of hurricanes over the near term, continue to influence market expectations. In addition, OPEC production behavior that would lead to voluntary production cuts aimed at keeping inventories fairly tight would also limit downward price pressure.
