Home Judge Issues Order in Currency Bias Case Written by AMOA Off the Top
According to AMOA's Legislative Counsel Mike Zolandz of Sonnenschein, Nath and Rosenthal in Washington, D.C., a federal court judge has issued a final order in the case where a group representing the visually impaired was successful in its lawsuit claiming U.S. paper currency discriminates against the blind.
In essence, the order, detailed below, does not mandate the U.S. Treasury Department to implement changes to any paper currency until such time as a denomination is approved for redesign by the Treasury Secretary. Thus, no redesign is required until a bill is to be redesigned.
Also of note, the $1 bill and the "next gen" $100 bill were excluded from coverage as part of the judge's order.
Given the limited affect of the order, Zolandz said an appeal from the Treasury Department is not anticipated. AMOA will continue to monitor and report on any future developments on this issue.

VT Publishes Census Report Written by AMOA Off the Top 
As noted in the intro, coin-op is a business short on solid statistics and long on scintillating stories. But, the annual Vending Times Census of the Industry-- 2008 Edition blends both data and descriptions, analysis and insight about the vending and music and games sectors.
Included with the October issue of Vending Times, the Census pegs 2007 total amusement volume (not including jukeboxes) at $6,139,000,000, down slightly from last year's $6.21 billion and down from a decade earlier, when, in 1997, the figure was $6.49 billion.
One bright spot for the industry, according to the VT Census report, is the digital jukebox. In 2007, some 14,000 new boxes went on location, bringing the estimated total to 48,000 by the end of that year.

Congratulations to the members of Class XIII, who completed the five-session, industry-directed continuing education program on campus at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, this past Monday.
On Saturday evening, Class XIII students, along with the incoming group of Class XIV participants, gathered for a reception, dinner and graduation ceremony.
AMOA President Russ Mawdsley and Notre Dame Committee Chairman Phil Juckem were on hand to present the 23 individual members of Class XIII with their completion certificates.
Virtually all of the individuals who have previously participated in the program will attest to the value of the program--both in terms of the formal education and informal networking that are core components of this initiative.
