In honor of the Democratic National Convention — and since Ralph Nader is nowhere in sight to play the spoiler (yet) — the Chief Home Officer has decided to toss his (my?) hat into the ring as a wildcard, third-party candidate for president.His / My platform: Ban smirks when people learn that boxers and tanktops are standard attire in the home office, require muzzles for barking dogs (OK, just Riley - and for cat owners who think their choice in pet is ohhh so much better than some lousy canine), mandate telework for all applicable employees, and grant carbon credits to home officers for each mile NOT commuted.OK, so those last two will never be adopted.  So I’m sitting in my home office, and I just got these spankin’ new business cards in the mail. Let me tell you, they’re pretty freakin’ cool.They’re from an English outfit called Moo.com. Seems they’ve gotten good at producing high-quality, four-color business cards relatively el cheapo. My batch of 50 included about three each of 15 or so images I selected from My Pictures. Pix of me, Home Office Highway, my kids, my various logos — the lot. Damn impressive results, too. Not some flimsy paper or pixel pock-marked images. These are the Real Deal — especially at $19.99 + shipping. (That may not be muy el cheapo, but variable data printing — like different images on different cards — brings added value that 1,000-for-$9.99 cards just cannot deliver).  Marcia Yudkin wrote in her Marketing Minute zine about tying into charities or eco-movements to gain marketing ju-ju. The concept is called “cause related marketing,” and it’s potentially a powerful draw, whether you’re running a home office or a Fortune 100 corporation.Cute puppies, forests and trees, and little children in need tug on many people’s heartstrings. The earth as seen from space can really put things into perspective.Her example was of Gary Hirshberg, the founder of organic Stonyfield Farm, who had zilch in no ad dollars when he opened shop. Tapping his consumers’ inherent green beliefs, Hirshberg placed on container lids messages encouraging action on global warming and public transport. The result, Yudkin reported him saying: “A 26% growth rate by showing my emotions on my lids.”But sometimes, your actions — no matter how innocent or well-intended — can have unintended consequences just the same. Kids (Back) in the Home Office: No Vacay from Fay

 Summer was scheduled to end Monday. Vacation was supposed to be over. Kids were supposed to head back to school. All was supposed to be quiet on the SOHO front.Then the Broward County School Board caught whiff of a tropical disturbance, something called Fay. And all bets were off. In less time than it took Michael Phelps to sneak his outstretched fingers to the wall and win the 100-meter butterfly, school was cancelled (apparently there was an issue of busses being unable to navigate through vicious 20-mph cross winds and a line in the contract with the Bus Driver Union Local 1492 forbidding workin dangerous conditions — like rain).So we work-at-home parents were left to manage out kids. While some people were stashing their hurricane supplies — lumber, batteries, PopTarts, I had more pressing needs.“How’s the supply of Benedryl?”Duct tape is a bit extreme as an apparatus for crowd control.  I really don’t like this time of year. It’s not so much the threat hurricanes pose to my South Florida home office, home-based business and family. That part I can handle.It’s more the alarmist nature of news teams throughout the coastal U.S. Starved of such coverage from a weak 2007 hurricane season, they’re ready to burst with hyperbole and dramatics.
