"People often ask me, where did I
get the name for my web development and Internet Marketing firm,
Dream City Design?"
My
only answer for them is that Dream City Design is more of a state
of mind of what business can be rather than what business is.
It is a state of mind in success rather than failure.
Think back for just a minute and see my
vision here. It is roughly late 1998, early 1999. Technology is
becoming affordable such as personal computers and Information
Technology is becoming faster and faster. Companies are beginning
to learn that Technology and Information Technology can make their
employees more productive, more efficient and make the company
more competitive and more profitable. "Silicon Alley"
is fast becoming a bigger and bigger trend in the downtown New
York City area.
By early 1999, there was already a "flotilla"
of Dot-Com companies either starting up or already on the bandwagon
of the "E-commerce" revolution. Many of these entities
jumped ahead of themselves, they wanted to do business in whole
different way and manner, solely on the internet. I remember the
buzz around the streets of NYC around that time. Everyone and
anyone wanted their hands on the idea, the thought of being able
to find a solid idea that is practical for people, and turn it
into an Internet money-making frenzy!
Big Companies and Organizations were planning
and developing bigger and more user friendly websites just to
help them "Brand" their name or extend sales to the
powerful medium of the Internet. Everyone and anybody just had
to get on the Internet Marketing and E-commerce development bandwagon.
Whether they were buying the next great Dot-Com IPO or they were
starting development of a business plan and website portal out
of their apartment, everyone was feeling the enlightenment of
this new Internet Generation.
At the intersections of the most popular
business districts and heavy traffic areas in New York City, Dot-Com
companies were giving out their shirts, gimmicks and other goodies
to try to physically promote their "pure internet" operations.
Their thinking was that for every 10 people that grabbed one of
their promotional items, 1 person would follow through and visit
their website for the service or products they were offering.
Pretty tall thinking but it was ingenious at the time.
In my corner of the woods, I was getting
into E-commerce development and web design. I was pretty much
dragged into at first by some friends of mine who were already
developing e-commerce and websites but turned out to like the
industry a lot. I also started interning with a web design studio
in Manhattan as well as took much advice and careful notes on
the art of website and search engine optimization. There is one
thing about designing a well functional E-commerce website. There
is a total different state of mind needed to make the website
attract attention and be physically successful. There is where
search engine marketing comes in.
There is a lot to be said about the rush
that is produced after spending blood, sweat and tears on designing
a web-presence that will be seen by millions on the internet.
Not only seen by millions hopefully but be successful as well.
This is what I call a "Dream City". My company, Dream
City Design, deals with reality and the way of doing business
today and in the future. We rest on solid ethics of treating our
clients fairly and honestly and doing a great job for them so
they can be successful. People still come to me and say things
like, "I knew that the Dot-Com boom would not last."
The truth is that those who are solely internet based might not
but the physical entities that do Internet Strategic Marketing
can have the oppotunity to be very successful.
There is nothing wrong with dreaming.
I am still trying to think up of the next big Dot-Com idea except
without having to invest a fortune. A lot of money is not what
it takes to become a business on the internet. It takes a lot
of fast thinking, dreams and creativity! That is what we call
the right recipe for a "Dream City Design"
