Elon Musk Makes Orbit

Posted by Max Chafkin at 10:57 AM Last night, SpaceX, a private rocket company based in Southern California, propelled a mass of aluminum to a speed of nearly 12,000 miles per hour, far above the Earth's surface. It was the first time in recent history that a private company successfully launched a rocket into orbit and a vindication for SpaceX founder Elon Musk. "Wow, this is a great day for SpaceX and the culmination of an enormous amount of work by a great team," he wrote in a brief blog post immediately after the launch.Musk, who was Inc.’s entrepreneur of the year, has been working towards this moment since starting SpaceX in 2002. He invested more than $100 million of his own fortune thanks in part to the $1.5 billion sale of PayPal, which he co-founded in 1999. Amazingly, Musk is a self-taught rocket designer—when I asked him last year how he did it, he replied simply, “I read a lot of books”—which makes yesterday's coup all the sweeter. The company had missed three previous attempts at reaching orbit, leaving his dream of making space travel economical in doubt—or rather, in doubt for everyone but Musk. The Entrepreneurial Playlist

Posted by Lauren Bans at 12:24 PM Inc.'s October cover story takes a look at a group of high-flying entrepreneurs under the age of 30. Members of the groups are active in industries as various as solar energy, software, WiFi, and footwear.So, besides age, what do these entrepreneurs have in common? According to photographer Kareem Black, the disparate group at the Inc. photoshoot found common ground when the conversation turned to music—specifically, the band Girl Talk. “I think it’s amazing, Black told Inc., “so I played it, and everybody was just kind of bugging out. It’s the ultimate pop culture music.” Of course it helps that more than a handful of our featured entrepreneurs run companies focused on music or youth culture. And even those who don’t will easily wax on about the tunes that get them through the day: Nate Alder of Klymit, a Utah-based smart clothing company, isn’t sheepish to admit he listens to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (he abbrevs it “MoTab”) while St. Louis chef-restaurateur Gerard Craft prefers Common’s latest hip-hop album while he’s whipping up his white chocolate hummus.Here’s a collection of songs that samples what our Millennials are uploading to their iPods and displaying for friends on their file-sharing sites like Pownce. Playlist courtesy of imeem, the website of 28 year old Dalton Caldwell, one of our featured entrepreneurs/music lovers.INC * Add Comment addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'pmaiorana1';

All Aboard: Grassroots Leadership

Posted by Angus Loten at 12:00 PM Ask your CFO and the mailroom guy about staff morale and you’re likely to get two very different answers. All too often, the perspectives of upper management aren’t aligned with those of lower-level employees. That can be the result of different roles and responsibilities. But it can also be a symptom of bad communications within a workplace enviromnent that doesn’t foster shared values and goals.Michael Abrashoff, a former Navy commander turned corporate consultant, says that’s bad for business. A few years ago, Abrashoff, a speaker at this year’s Inc. 500 conference in D.C., turned around a poorly managed ship and its unhappy crew by giving them more say and a greater stake in achieving broad goals – an approach he calls grassroots leadership. That lead to a range of bottom-up innovation. Within a few months, both captain and crew were spending one night a week on deck listening to jazz, smoking cigars, and watching the sunset -- a staff led idea to boost morale. They were also using stainless steel bolts to secure top-side equipment, a simple notion from an enlisted man that cut down the need to constantly repaint the ship and saved the Navy and U.S. taxpayers a fortune. A reversal of the Navy’s rigid top-down chain of command, the move helped earn the ship a reputation as one of the finest in the Pacific Fleet in terms of combat readiness.The approach was inspired in part by one of Abrashoff’s own sailors, he says, who described the under performing ship and its crew as a tree full of monkeys. Those at the top of the tree, he told Abrashoff, only saw smiling faces looking up to them. Yet when those on the bottom looked up, “all they saw was … well, a very different view,” says Abrashoff. * 1 Comments addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'pmaiorana1';

Video: The Candidates and Your Business

Posted by mshick at 4:40 PM The nation's financial system took another nosedive this week. Part of the job of fixing it will fall to the next president. Here's a recording from the main stage of the 2008 Inc. 500 Conference in D.C. where John McCain's top economic adviser, Doug Holtz-Eakin, discusses how it affects your business and what they plan to do about it. You can watch the recording after the link. Decency Pays

Posted by Angus Loten at 4:14 PM Though running a small business is largely a micro-economic affair, the increasingly grave macro-economic climate is hanging heavy over the 2008 Inc. 500 conference in D.C., where federal lawmakers on Friday were preparing to intervene in the nation’s shaky financial system.Top advisors for Barack Obama and John McCain will tackle these and other issues at the conference later in the day. Entrepreneurs here are clearly frustrated with the leaders of top mortgage and financial firms, whose questionable behavior – not least of which is what now appears to be bold faced lies to board members and the public -- is certain to make it much trickier to access the kind of credit they’ll need to continue growing their businesses.But are we wrong to always expect honesty and decency from the heads of giant corporations? That is, should leaders never lie?Management guru Tom Peters isn’t so sure. He told hundreds of small-business owners gathered here for a main-stage discussion on entrepreneurial trends, that CEOs are often surrounded by ambiguity. “Most of the time you don’t know if you’re telling the truth or not,” Peters said.For Seth Godin, the author of Permission Marketing and other national best sellers, the question isn’t whether leaders should tell the truth. He said what leaders need to do is lead – and the best way to do that is through honesty and decency. That means being transparent, taking care of employees with health-care coverage and other benefits, and, yes, telling the truth.After all, Godin said, that’s how the vast majority of Inc. 500 businesses got to where they are today – the nation’s fastest growing private companies.While greed may be good, decency pays. * Add Comment addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'pmaiorana1';

Remembering America's Oldest CEO

Posted by Tamara Schweitzer at 3:51 PM Last October, I had the pleasure of interviewing Jack Weil, the 106-year-old founder of Rockmount Ranchwear, a Denver-based retailer of fashionable western wear. Weil, who was believed to be the oldest CEO in the United States, was profiled as part of Inc.com's "8 Over 80," which recognized entrepreneurs who were running companies well into -- and even past -- their 80s. Weil passed away last month at the ripe age of 107 and it would be remiss of us not to honor his legacy. The most recent obit on Weil was published in The Economist last week and speaks to his legendary influence on the western apparel industry. Weil founded Rockmount Ranchwear in 1946 and even at 107-years-old, he was still chatting it up with customers every morning in his retail store located in the LoDo district of Denver. Weil was fascinated by the West, and he passed that enthusiasm for the lifestyle onto his customers through his original designs. Weil was the first to produce western shirts with snaps instead of buttons, and he helped commercialize the bolo tie. The Rockmount brand is also known for its saw-toothed pocket design and diamond snaps, a look that has been popularized over the years by celebrities from Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan, to Robert Redford and even former president, Ronald Reagan. His shirts also made it to the big screen and were worn by most of the actors in Brokeback Mountain. And, as The Economist notes, just a couple of weeks ago at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, the Colorado House delegation sported a red, white and blue version of the company's signature shirt.Beyond being a successful businessman, Weil will be remembered as someone who embodied the ideals of an entrepreneur -- he loved what he did and there wasn't a day when he didn't work hard at it. From our interview, I remember him as a simple man who enjoyed being a salesman because it allowed him to connect with customers around the world who shared a love for the spirit of the West. And thanks to the work of that dedicated entrepreneur, it is the spirit that will forever live on in the Rockmount brand. * Add Comment addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'pmaiorana1';

Barack's BFF

Posted by Jason Del Rey at 12:31 PM As Barack Obama's campaign gained momentum over the past year, the name Marty Nesbitt has surfaced more and more. Nesbitt is his national campaign treasurer, basketball bud, and close friend. He's also the founder, president, and CEO of The Parking Spot, an airport parking and shuttle service with locations at 12 airports nationwide. Besides being known for its yellow-and-black spotted shuttles, The Parking Spot has made a name for itself with frequent pickups (every 5-7 minutes), complimentary bottles of water and copies of USA Today, and the option to pay extra for a car wash and gas fill-up while you're gone. There are no locations in the Northeast and I haven't used the service. But most of the reviews I've read have been solid. Anyone have their own review? * 4 Comments addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'pmaiorana1';

Why did I get this Jet Blue voucher?

Posted by Hannah Clark Steiman at 2:19 PM This weekend I flew on JetBlue from New York City to Portland, Maine. Today, I opened my email and learned that I received a $15 voucher because the DIRECTV service went out during the one hour we were airborne on the return trip. This voucher seemed odd, for two reasons. 1. I didn't notice the DIRECTV going out on the flight.2. Since when do airlines care if the DIRECTV goes out on a flight?My hypothesis: This is basically a coupon. They're just trying to give me an incentive to book another JetBlue flight. For some reason, they decided that apologizing for some malfunction and sending out a voucher would be more effective than just sending out a coupon. Perhaps this way, customers will give them points for customer service AND book their next flight on JetBlue. * Add Comment addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'pmaiorana1';

This Has Almost Nothing to Do with the iPhone

Posted by Athena Schindelheim at 4:59 PM My MacBook keeps abruptly telling me that my startup disk is full. The last time I owned an Apple laptop, it lost patience with me and sank into an irreversible coma, taking my entire self-documented history with it. I finally made my way to the Apple store in Soho a couple of weeks ago to buy an external hard drive. But true to New York's perpetual inconvenience and my own hardware incompetence, the product refused to mount to my desktop when I got it home.So, I returned to the store today. Not So Cuil

Posted by Jason Del Rey at 11:45 AM Google must be laughing.After reading a story in this morning's Times about the new search engine Cuil (pronounced "cool"), developed by several former Google employees, I figured I'd take it for a test run. The company says its engine is more comprehensive than Google's after all.So I started by typing in the phrase "Inc. magazine" and was told that Cuil didn't find any results. Really? Nothing? So I tried two more times. Same disappointing message. I'm not ready to write the site off for good, but not exactly the way you want to roll out a highly publicized project that's received $33 million in funding. Anyone have better luck? * 11 Comments addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'pmaiorana1';

Gold-plated networking groups

Posted by Hannah Clark Steiman at 11:19 AM In the last issue of Inc. we wrote about networking groups that charge $10,000 a year and sometimes even more. What do you get for all that money? At the Breakfast Network, you get a lot of personal attention from the founder, who will set you up with one-on-one meetings with bigshots you want to meet. At Vistage, you get access to top-notch speakers, as well as small-group meetings with other business owners, who serve as a de facto advisory board. Then, of course, there are the nonprofits, Entrepreneurs' Organization and Young Presidents' Organization. The offer exclusivity: YPO, for example, only accepts people who have built $8 million companies by age 45. You can read about more of these groups here. Do you know of any other high-priced networking groups? Have you belonged to any of the ones on our list? Were they worth the price? * 3 Comments addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'pmaiorana1';

The IncBizNet Movement

Posted by Angus Loten at 3:50 PM How has social media changed the way private companies operate? For one thing, it's becoming a lot easier to interact with your peers, both online and off. That was the underlying message at a gathering of several dozen New York area business owners and executives at 7 World Trade Center Wednesday night, a group brought together by IncBizNet.The event featured a panel of PR and branding experts offering insight into successful Web marketing strategies, whether by outranking your competition on Google or creating buzz in the blogosphere.That the event itself was a real-world extension of a fast-growing virtual business-to-business network wasn't lost on the panelists.Like branding expert Spike Jones said, gone are the days of simple advertising campaigns, press releases and product launches. These days you have to be part of a movement.So, is your company part of a movement? * Add Comment addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'pmaiorana1';

Mulligan for Miss USA

Posted by Jason Del Rey at 5:23 PM When I heard about Miss USA's stumble last weekend at the Miss Universe pageant, I was saddened. I won't lie. Was it entertaining at a certain level? Sure. But mortifying as well. And since I got to know Crystle Stewart (the woman behind the title) a little bit this spring, I didn't laugh as much as I normally would have.A few months back, I interviewed her at the Miss Universe headquarters (yes, there is such a thing) in midtown Manhattan. She was not at all what I expected. And that's a good thing. My expectations were low, if not non-existent. The only beauty queen with whom I was at all familiar was Miss South Carolina Teen USA 2007 -- and if you've seen this YouTube classic, you know she didn't set the bar very high. Still, Stewart won me over easily. She came across as genuine and smart, and dispelled my notion that all beauty queens were better seen than heard. So why was I there in the first place? After she was crowned in April, all sorts of news organizations were labeling her as an entrepreneur and when the PR folks at Miss Universe confirmed it, we figured Inc. should check it out. In my hour-long face-to-face she gushed about her business, Inside/Out, which offers self-improvement workshops, birthday party planning, and motivational speeches for girls and young women in her hometown, Missouri City, Texas. It sounded like a young venture, but a promising one. She spoke about her plans for expansion and how her recent win might help it along. It sounded feasible. And she hypothesized about the effect a win at the Miss Universe contest could have on going global. I couldn't help but root for her. She was an entrepreneur, I was convinced, and as you may have read in our June issue, I wasn't afraid to put that in print.So, yes, I was a bit bummed when I watched the clip of the fall. There are plenty of "celebrity entrepreneurs" who simply slap their name or endorsement on a product after they've achieved fame and expect that to be enough. I wouldn't have a shed a tear for Lindsay Lohan. But that's not Stewart. She deserves a mulligan. So Crystle, if you're reading this, I'm giving you a chance to redeem yourself. I hear that you'll be in attendance at the Inc. 500 conference this September in Washington, D.C. If you want a re-do at that evening gown strut, I'll see what I can do. * 1 Comment addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'pmaiorana1';

Starbucks + Pinkberry= ?

Posted by Lauren Bans at 5:16 PM You may recall our post on the class action lawsuit brought against the trendy yogurt chain Pinkberry a few months back (Pinkberry’s Unnatural Flavor Leaves a Sour Taste). Apparently additives like magnesium oxide and tocopherol that give Pinkberry its distinct sour taste didn’t keep Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz from seeing a sweet deal in the company. After Schultz’s venture capital firm invested $27.5 million in Pinkberry last year, he’s bringing his investment home with a new line of “Pinkberry-inspired” drinks available at Starbucks.The sippable frozen treats, called Sorbettos, are an Italian-style mix of ice and citrus-flavored Pinkberry yogurt finished with a variety of different mix-ins, including berry and mango juices. For now they’re only being offered in about 40 percent of Los Angeles Starbucks stores as a test-run in the state that spawned smoothie giants like Jamba Juice and Juice It Up!. Cos La Porta, Starbucks’ senior vice president, is hoping the new drinks ensnare some of Jamba Juice’s clientele. So far, so good—our Los Angeles based spy reported there were lines around the corner at her local Starbucks on Melrose and Stanley Ave. for the $2.95, 10-ounce Sorbettos. La Porta is predicting the drinks will fulfill a need for an un-caffeinated afternoon pick-me-up. He told the Los Angeles Times: “This is what our customers have told us they want….something refreshing in the afternoon.”Starbucks has been in the news of late after it announced plans to close 600 stores across the nation due to flailing finances. Are the new drinks a nice way for Howard Schultz to get some good press going about Starbucks? Either way, it gives new meaning to the rumors that his company is getting creamed. * Add Comment addthis_url = location.href; addthis_title = document.title; addthis_pub = 'pmaiorana1'; More Entries » Try a RISK-FREE Issue of Inc.
