The tree produced on average extension growth of 25cm in the first year. During 1997 the lower two thirds of the tree totally defoliated and the remaining top third thinned to the current years needles. Following inspection under the tree management system, it was placed on the removal list for that winter. Roger Howard, the Arboriculture Manager for The Royal Botanic Gardens, chose not to remove the tree but to de-compact the root zone and inoculate with mycorrhizae and beneficial bacteria using Terravent , followed by mulching the surface of the treated root zone area. Within the same growing season, the tree had responded to the treatment and some 8 years later continues to enjoy robust good health. Terravention is now a permanent and major part of the tree care program at the RBG Kew. Terravention Operator Certification It is important to note: The introduction of Terravention Operational Competancy Certification is being implemented over a 12 month period, starting from April 2005. Under no circumstances does the introduction of Certification imply that any of the owner/operators of existing machines are not competant or qualified to carryout Terravention. Every week, we receive questions regarding the qualification and training of Terravent users, with respect to their ability to administer Terravention to a standard or set specification. As a consequence of this, coupled with the increasing awareness of the success of Terravention and the growing demand for the service, a need to introduce a certification program for the owners of Terravent machines and the personnel that apply Terravention, has become necessary. The certification should eradicate any uncertaintity with regard to the products recomended for use with the Terravent. We have been made aware on a very few occasions, prior to treatment taking place, that chemical fertilizers were an option in the specification provided. We, under no circumstances, endorse any chemical "Look Good Quick" products. The certification of the Terravent operators will hopefully resolve any issues when it comes to making a decision as to whether Terravention should be applied and to what specification. There should be no ambiguity regarding the treatment protocol and what each specification should cover.. Certification will provide, both customers and application personel, a comfort and guarantee that the system has been applied to the manufacturer's specification, with the health of trees as a principle aim. TO BE COMPLETED Sudden Oak Death (SOD) Following the recent publicity regarding SUDDEN OAK DEATH, we have received hundreds of emails asking the questions; can Terravention cure the trees that have already been infected and can Terravention prevent a tree from being infected. From experience and observation of treated specimens in the path of SOD, (USA) we known that a tree has a far better chance of fending off attack if its root system has a full compliment of its NATURAL soil constituents. If a tree has a healthy root system, this suggests that you will have a tree that has the best possible chance to defend itself against a pathonagenic attack. Terravention provides a decompacted root zone, well oxygenated and drained and additionally populated with Mycorrhizal Fungi to aid root propergation. It would be wrong to claim that Terravention is the magic solution to SOD, it isn't, Terravention simply provides a tree with the optimum root propagation environment allowing, the tree to fortify and sustain its own natural defense system. Terravention has been administered to many, many, trees over the past nine years, most of which have been showing considerable signs of decline for various reasons and many facing certain death. After treatment, apart from a very, very small percentage (note) , all have all responded extremely well, in fact, in most cases are looking far healthier than neighbouring specimens of the same species that had previously appeared to be, and were considered to be, healthy trees. (note) Only two trees to our knowledge have not recovered following treatment, one had suffered a major chemical violation of its root system and extensive root severence, the second had similarly suffered extensive root damage (due to construction works and plant trafficing) but had also failed to show any signs of growth for more than three years prior to treatment. Due to the fact that Terravention has been developed to treat the soil surrounding the roots of trees, in a natural way as possible, the indigenous mycorrhizal fungi and beneficial bacteria thrives, therefore the tree is able to respond accordingly.
