BRAZIL’S ports boss Pedro Brito has promised to sign a dredging contract “by Friday, or Monday at the very latest” to help clear debris and sand blocking flood-stricken Itajai’s shipping channel.
The flood reduced the depth at the port from 10m to just 6-7m in places.
Itajai is a major gateway for Brazil’s chicken exports of $5Bn and 3.3M tonnes a year. The sector is losing millions of dollars per week that the port is not open, according to the Brazilian chicken exporters’ association.
Brito met with Itajai Port Authority chiefs, local officials and Teconvi box terminal managers. They agreed that 3,800m³ of sand would need to be dredged out of the channel.
A dredger was reportedly already en route to Itajai, to begin work early next week, pending the signing.
