BREAKING NEWS: AIG Cancels 160 Events After Media Scrutiny

NEW YORK—On Nov. 11, Edward M. Liddy, chairman/CEO for insurance and financial services company American International Group (AIG), issued a statement to the press notifying the public of the company's plan to cancel 160 events following a news report that scrutinized a recent AIG meeting held while the company is receiving federal financial support. "Recent news reports have grossly mischaracterized an American International Group seminar for 150 independent financial planners held in Phoenix last week," Liddy said. "The financial planners are not AIG employees. In addition, the cost to AIG for this event was minimal. More than 90 percent of the costs were paid either by sponsors or by the independent financial planners themselves. "It is essential for AIG to conduct seminars of this kind to keep independent financial planners abreast of investment products and services including those offered by AIG. The financial planners are responsible for generating almost $200 million in revenue this year for AIG as of Sept. 30th. "On Oct. 10, I issued a directive to all AIG employees and subsidiaries to reduce expenses and conserve cash, including canceling all nonessential conferences or meetings, unnecessary travel and excessive overhead. Since then, we have canceled more than 160 events. We conducted a top-to-bottom review of all expenses of the Phoenix meeting in advance and found that it was consistent with my Oct. 10th directive. This conference was approved because it provides the kind of communication we must conduct with the people who sell our products if we are to be successful and repay the U.S. taxpayer."

Planner Says Attendees Are Finding Ways To Register

Don Cantrell, the chairman of the South Carolina Association for Educational Technology, weighed in on ConventionSouth's November Feedback Live question, which asked, "Are you finding that organizations are limiting their team members' travel?" In his response, he shared why he thinks his attendance numbers are dropping and what attendees are doing to participate in the event. From Cantrell: With our annual conference (S.C. EdTech) set for early November, we definitely have seen the recent economic downturn impact our event already. While other planners across the nation have seen a steady decline in overall attendance by about 10 percent, we have seen an increase each year by 10 percent until this year. Many of our prospective attendees that normally come each year are not planning to do so this year, their reasons are threefold. (1) The cost of travel, (2) Substantial local and state budget cuts, (3) Perception. Oftentimes, the perception of allowing staff to travel and participate in "non-essential" events such as a professional development conference like ours can have just as much an impact as real dollars and cents. Even if the potential attendee has a funding source that would support and justify participation such as federal grants, private funding, etc., oftentimes, travel and participation is denied by management. I am relieved to report, however, that this year's conference appears to be successful nonetheless. While our advance registration numbers for attendees does not equal our 2007 numbers (an all-time conference high), it does remain higher than any previous year before then. To help those folks on the balance of being able to attend or not, we have seen more anecdotal instances where participants plan to "buddy-up" by sharing accommodations, car-pooling, and including the conference's complimentary catering events in their cost justifications. We have seen a marked increase in the numbers of folks interested in being on our volunteer conference staff. We have, on average, about 60 conference volunteers. Those who volunteer to work for the conference full time, receive complimentary conference registration and lunch tickets. This goes a long way for those who would otherwise not be able to attend. Adding complimentary boxed lunches may initially add another cost to the conference budget, but with creative sponsorship programs and other revenue offsets, it really helps the attendees with justification to attend and minimizing their costs of attending.
