Disasters are large-scale events like hurricanes, floods and earthquakes where you may be on your own for awhile before help can get to you. In emergencies, like a fire, you only need to manage things until help arrives in a few minutes. In either case, the ability of your business and your employees to survive depends in large measure on how well you have planned. And in how well you have trained people in the execution of the plan.
Is your business is prepared to deal with such a disruption? Do your people know what to do? Do you have plans to shift work to other offices outside the area if needed? Do you have your important client list somewhere safe so you can at least contact them to advise them of your situation?
If you haven't yet read the article Survive the Unthinkable Through Crisis Planning I would encourage you to do so for help in developing your crisis management plan.In addition, I have added more resources to the Disaster Planning Resources and Information section on this website that link to additional resources on the Internet to help you develop your disaster recovery and business continuity plans. Don't put this off. You need to prepare now - before the disaster or emergency occurs.Comments (0)PermalinkI Hate Jargon (Even When I Use It)Friday August 29, 2008My experience in computers goes back far enough to know about "sneaker nets", the use of floppy disks being carried from one PC to another, presumably by someone wearing sneakers, to share data. When I heard the term sneakerize, I assumed they were related. They aren't. The verb "to sneakerize" means to offer a bewildering number of choices in a product, like the effect when you walk into an athletic shoe store and see all the choices on the walls.
Had someone told me they were going to sneakerize their software, I would have assumed they were going to make it compact enough to fit on a single CD. The advice I would have given them would have been completely off target if they were actually intending to create a variety of slight modifications of the same product. Either they would have lost money, I would have lost professional credibility, or both. Jargon usually serves to confuse people more often than to clarify things. Make sure you say what you mean. Make sure the person hearing you understands what you actually are saying, not just what they think you might be saying. You will be better off in the long term. Here are some related thoughts:

If you are wondering whether to make management your career, take time to read our light-hearted Top 10 Clues That You Are Management Material.
Part two of that article is more serious and offers specific traits and behaviors that are characteristic of better managers so be sure to continue on to page two and read How To Be A Better Manager.Comments (0)PermalinkLearning From JanitorsMonday August 25, 2008I used to volunteer at a local elementary school (which I strongly recommend to everyone). One day, at the end of the school year, I was talking to the janitor as he and his team started a thorough cleaning of the school. I remarked on what a tough job it must be. He replied, "It would be a lot easier to keep the school clean if they didn't have all these kids here".
I guess he missed the point. Without the kids, it wouldn't be a school. Without those students getting the school dirty, he wouldn't have had a job. Amazingly, I see the same thing in the world of business much too often. People comment about how much easier their day would be if they didn't have to deal with the customers. Your customers are the reason you are in business. If you don't have any customers, you are not in business. Here are two articles everyone in your organization needs to read, those in the customer service organization, but especially those others in the organization who don't realize that we are all in the customer service department.Good Customer Service Is No Longer EnoughGuaranteed Sales IncreaseComments (0)Permalink See More Blog EntrieszSB(2,5);Free Management Newsletter!Sign Upif(z336>0){w(''+ap[0]+at[4]+as[0]);adunit('','','about.com',ch,gs,336,280,'1','bb',3);w('')}if(z155>0){w(''+ap[0]+at[4]+as[0]);adunit('','','about.com',ch,gs,336,155,'1','ps',4);w('')} Discuss Recent Blog Posts Disaster Management And Crisis Planning I Hate Jargon (Even When I Use It) Are You Management Material?
