Current account gap narrows slightlySA’S CURRENT account deficit improved from the first quarter’s slightly downwardly revised shortfall of 8,9% of GDP to 7,3% of gross domestic product in the second quarter, as exports rose while portfolio investment recovered after a strong outflow in the previous quarter.The Reserve Bank’s September quarterly bulletin said today the current account gap improved, as expected, from the first quarter’s slightly downwardly revised shortfall of 8,9% of GDP, the biggest deficit in almost three decades.
The Bank said the deficit continued to be adequately financed, with portfolio flows rebounding from the previous quarter’s slump.
