CEA expects 15 percent fewer companies to exhibit!
With the struggling economy, January's International CES is expected to be smaller that those of previous years, both in terms of floor space occupied and participating companies. That's what organizers with the Consumer Electronics Association told the Wall Street Journal. Read more here. While attendance at the show is expected to match last year's total, CEA expects 15 percent fewer companies to exhibit, and 5 percent less floor space to be occupied. Hotels in Las Vegas have responded by cutting room rates during the event, which is set to take place Jan. 8-11. International CES has been the largest trade show in the U.S., and one of the largest in the world, for several years.

Black Friday Sales Rise
Stephen Silverwww.Dealerscope.comDec 1, 2008Despite all of the worries related to today's economy, retailers actually reported a small increase over the year before in sales on the weekend that began with Black Friday. According to figures released Sunday by the National Retail Federation, in conjunction with BIGresearch, 172 million shoppers spent an average of $372.57, for a total of around $41 billion. The spending-per-shopper figure, which applies to both stores and Web sites, rose 7.2 percent from 2007. 73.6 million of the shoppers did so on Black Friday itself. More than half of those who shopped visited discount stores. "Pent-up demand on electronics and clothing, plus unparalleled bargains on this season’s hottest items helped drive shopping all weekend," NRF's President and CEO, Tracy Mullin, said as part of the release. "Holiday sales are not expected to continue at this brisk pace, but it is encouraging that Americans seem excited to go shopping again." $534 Million Spent OnlineAccording to another survey, of online spending by comScore, Americans spent $534 million online on Black Friday. This represented an increase- of 1 percent- over the same period last year. The news is not all positive, however; in the first month of the holiday season, which comScore defines as having begun Nov. 1, online spending has dropped 4 percent over last year. The comScore survey also found that 24.2 percent of Black Friday shoppers went to the store between noon and 4 p.m., the most of any daypart; 8 a.m. to noon came in second with 23.1 percent.

Did you know it was Abraham Lincoln who issued the proclamation designating a Thanksgiving a national holiday?
Proclamation of ThanksgivingWashington, D.C.October 3, 1863By the President of the United States of America.A Proclamation. The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle or the ship; the axe has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consiousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom. No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union. In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the United States to be affixed.Done at the City of Washington, this Third day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three, and of the Independence of the Unites States the Eighty-eighth.By the President: Abraham LincolnWilliam H. Seward,Secretary of State

Samsung Digital Signage Webinar Dec 2nd and 9th
In my blog last month on capitalizing on Digital Signage opportunities by adding on to the display sale, I suggested that every deal become an "expert" on at least 2 Content Management solutions. Here is your opportunity to learn one. One of the easiest, most cost effective Digital Signage solutions out there is the Samsung MagicInfo Digital Signage Solution. Samsung display models ending in an "N" come equipped with an embedded PC and MagicInfo Content Management software. This is an inexpensive, viable solution for 1 or 50 (or more) separate displays, all updated via the internet. On Tuesday December 2nd and Tuesday December 9th, Stampede will host a webinar training you on the MagicInfo solution, including concept, installation, and publishing using the software. At the end of the 2nd webinar session, a certification exam will be available. Upon completing with a passing grade, you will be issued a certificate and a disk with Samsung MagicInfo logos to use on your business cards, email, and internet. The training will be moderated by Jonathan Brawn of Brawn Consulting. Brawn Consulting will be holding the first ever Digital Signage Certified Expert training program at Digital Signage Expo in 2009! These guys know there stuff and are a great contact to have in the industry. Session times are below, contact your Stampede Sales rep for an invitation to register!Christina SmithProduct ManagerSession 1 - Tuesday December 2nd 12:30 - 3:30 ESTSession 2 - Tuesday December 9th 12:30 - 3:30 EST (Must attend session 1 to register)

Panasonic Centralizing Plasma Display Production
By Greg Tarr -- TWICE, 11/20/2008 8:33:00 AMOsaka, Japan — In an effort to improve its cost efficiency and price competitiveness, Panasonic said Wednesday it will consolidate all plasma panel production in Hyogo Prefecture by the end of the year, the Nikkei news service reported.Panasonic currently manufactures 65-inch plasma panels at a plant in Ibaraki, Osaka Prefecture, and produces all other sizes at two factories in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture.By centralizing production of all screen sizes at the efficient Amagasaki facilities, Panasonic said it expects to cut production costs, including electricity charges, by up to $42.2 million year.Panasonic said it also intends to concentrate development and testing of flat panels, including next-generation OEL panels, at the Ibaraki site. A new development site for LCD panels is planned to be established there next fiscal year, along with a prototype production line for LCD screens, Nikkei reported.

Consumer vs Commercial…
Everybody knows that Consumer Electronics grade LCD and plasma displays are cheaper than Commercial grade displays. That’s why most of our customers come to us asking for a Sharp Aquos or a Panasonic Viera. As professional dealers, it is our business to know the pros and cons of such a switch and lead our customers in the right direction. We also all know that you get what you pay for.... Most importantly, and I can't stress it enough when you are talking about 100 lb displays is that warranty is key! An on site warranty is a must for any wall mount display. Most commercial models offer AT LEAST one year on site warranty. Your tier 1 vendors will usually offer a 2 or 3 year on site warranty which you can upgrade to 5 year with a Stampede Silver Star warranty. When spending $2000 - $3000 for a panel, don't you want that insurance? Consumer models may seem half the cost, but their warranty is usually only 1 year and it is depot. If you are going to hang a consumer model in a public place and run it more than 6-8 hours a day, you WILL Require warranty service within the first 2 years. You will need to take it off the wall and bring it somewhere. Some manufacturers reduce their CE warranty to 90 days if it is used in a public area. Ouch! Now how much money have your saved?Another feature of commercial displays is the reliability of them. Commercial displays are tested and guaranteed to work with 20+ hours use daily. CE televisions are only designed for 6-8 hours daily in a controlled environment (temperature & humidity). Using them in a hot and humid area, such as a restaurant, for 14-16 hours a day will result in overheating, color degradation, and warping of the frame where it is mounted. If your customer wants to take this risk to save a few bucks, let's hope they get it serviced before the 1 year warranty runs out! (Again, back to the warranty!.... I told you it was key)Picture quality is not the last reason, but may be the most important, that you should sway your customers against CE products when displaying in public areas. CE products are designed for cable Tv inputs and specific signal devices. In general, they have cooler color settings, producing blue/whites and all together less color accuracy. Commercial displays are intended for PC and high def input sources. Their backlight covers a wider color spectrum producing the best picture quality. One more thing, if you are going to be mounting in portrait mode, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT CE. Heat rises, and CE products are only designed to dispurse heat properly in landscape mode. Using a consumer electronics television in portrait model will surely cause overheating and warping in the upper side. Most likely, your CE warranty won't cover this at all, regardless of whether it occurs during your warranty period or not. For more reasons why you should lead with commercial products, talk to your Stampede Sales representative.
