History of the chemical production
in Serbia began back in the 16th century
with homemade manufacturing of candles and soaps, production
at the workshop level started about the middle of the 19th
century and first industrial scale plants were built at the
end of the 19th century.
The
chemical industry, which according to the national nomenclature
includes manufacturing of plastic products, plays an important
role in the overall economy of Serbia as one of the leading industrial sectors.
Today it covers
a broad range of products from basic chemicals derived from
naphtha and natural gas (such as olefins, ammonia and methanol),
inorganics derived from mineral raw materials (such as almost
all essential acids, alkalies and salts) and chemical products
based on natural feedstocks (such as fatty acids, chemical derivatives
of cellulose and products of fermentation and extraction) to
ever expanding spectrum of intermediates and downstream products
(fertilizers, polymers, fibers, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, detergents, toiletries, coatings, adhesives, explosives, etc.).

The
chemical industry's input and output are closely correlated
with achievements of the local oil
& gas industry and rubber
industry. Participations of those three industrial branches
in gross domestic product, export and import of overall national
industry are over 16%, 20% and 35% respectively. It should be
mentioned that a number of specialized and well-experienced
local firms dealing with the spectrum of service
activities (research, engineering, process equipment manufacturing,
trade, etc.) are very important back-up for production activity
and business development of those industrial sectors.
With
the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia and imposing of the UN sanctions in 1992,
the economy of Serbia entered the most difficult decade in its
history. Troubles escalated in early spring of 1999 when NATO
attacked Serbia. Many industrial facilities were seriously damaged or completely
destroyed during the 78 days of NATO's air-campaign but it should
be underlined that petroleum refineries and chemical plants
were specially targeted.
Although
operating under such terrible circumstances this leading sector
of the Serbian process industry has still survived. The share
of chemicals & chemical products, plastic products, rubber
goods and petroleum & gas derivatives in total industry’s
gross domestic product overcame 21.5% in 2004, and export of
those products exceeded 663 million $.
