TVCC To Break Ground on New Caldwell CenterWork on the new Caldwell Center for Treasure Valley Community College is scheduled to begin in September at Sky Ranch Business Center. Groundbreaking for the estimated $6.5 million to $7.5 million project was August 27th. Construction is scheduled to begin in October.
Invited guests gathered at the groundbreaking site with greetings and remarks by:
• Garret Nancolas, Mayor, City of Caldwell• Jim Sorensen, President, Treasure Valley Community College• ElJay Waite, Caldwell East Urban Renewal District• Butch Gilliland, Norfleet Development• Jim Thomssen, Caldwell/Canyon Economic Development Council• David Ferdinand, Commissioner, Canyon County• Clete Edmunson, Idaho Governor's Office• Roy Valdez, Deputy Director, Idaho Department of Labor• Bruce Schultz, Director, TVCC Caldwell Center Caldwell Mayor Garret Nancolas describes the project as a prime example of cooperation and mutual benefit among the city, private enterprise and educators. Butch Gilliland of Norfleet Development will build the Caldwell Center on Sky Ranch property owned by the Caldwell East Urban Renewal Angency, then lease it to TVC for six or seven years until the renewal district has enough money to buy the building, at which point the district will lease it to TVCC.
Such partnerships are essential for TVCC to grow in Idaho, TVCC President James Sorensen said, since the Ontario-based school cannot use Oregon state funds for Idaho operations and Idaho state dollars can't be spent on an Oregon college."This project is in keeping with the Urban Renewal Agency's mission to provide support for infrastructure that will strengthen our communities," CEURA Board Chairman ElJay Waite said. "We feel it's especially appropriate to have these dollars go back to fund programs that will help increase access to education and training opportunities right in our own community."For more information on the TVCC development, contact C/CEDC at 208.454.0087.
Group Forms to Promote Wine CountryThe Caldwell/Canyon Economic Development Council, in cooperation with a host of other travel/tourism advocates, is in the process of launching an aggressive marketing campaign to attract “weekender” visitors to the area and “drink in” the views and some of our award-winning wines. The preliminary plan centers on the following strategies:
Marketing:• Develop a recognizable image for the region (branding)• Develop a web site that describes our history, wines, climates, maps, and promotional materials• Coordinate activities and marketing efforts with the Snake River Canyon Scenic Byway, Chambers of Commerce, Department of Commerce (travel and tourism division) and other travel/tourism groups• Develop sales and promotional materials (brochure packets, insert cards, maps, etc.)• Direct traffic off the interstate to designated wineries through billboards and other way-finding signage • Target specific metropolitan areas in the west (Salt Lake, Portland, Reno, etc.) with a portfolio mailing/marketing effort.• Invite high-profile wine and tourism writers to tour our area• Encourage area businesses to identify the region as the heart of Idaho wine countryEducation• Hold educational wine tasting events to enhance local demand• Work with local growers to elevate wine and grape quality through educational programs and tasting panels• Hold an annual marketing workshop for the entire membership to refocus group priorities• Work with TVCC, U of I, C of I, and other educational institutions in growing and developing viticulture (accredited and non-accredited programs) Growth of Industry• Develop a database from available vineyard plots for prospective growers (phenology, climate, grape quality)• Create a plan to attract new vineyards and winery businesses• Work with area developers on “industry-friendly” development in the region, promoting the wine country• Encourage area restaurants/eateries to carry area-produced wines• Update the economic impact analysis for the region
A major press conference is scheduled for mid-June to highlight certain items and efforts forthcoming to Canyon County…So stay tuned for further information. If you are interested in serving on the marketing committee, please contact CCEDC at 454-0087.
