I’m often faced with this question from callers. It is no doubt the primary question that begs a very long answer, but typically my response is—Is your book written? Naturally, it begins here: just as building a house begins with the first shovelful of dirt for a footing or the first trip to the lumberyard, publishing a book begins with writing the book. Of course, there is the vision, the hum of the imagination that prompts the idea, the rumbling of possibility and energy that inspires—and this cannot be ignored. Writers—sometimes only would-be writers—often contact me with an idea. Is it a good idea, they ask, good enough to warrant a book?

 Thomas A. Daniel, born in 1948 in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a son of the South. A veteran of the Viet Nam War, he began his photographic career in South Viet Nam. Mr. Daniel went on to receive his BFA in communications, art, and design from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), his MA in photography from Goddard College, and his MFA in photo/film from VCU. Mr. Daniel later returned to VCU as a Distinguished Visiting Artist in Photography.
