CENTERLESS GRINDING COMPILATION
Beginning with the invention of key components in 1915 centerless grinding has been a fundamental tool for production of precision cylindrical parts, an invention some would label as the most important in grinding technology. Once only affordable to companies with high production, new centerless grinding  machines today are a serious option for even small job shops. Though centerless processes are simple in design, the nearly century-long history of applications and research shows a process where precise control is complex and difficult, particularly as precision falls into sub-micron dimensions. Handbook of Machining with Grinding Wheels
After more than a decade, manufacturers now have a resource to help with production grinding applications. The Handbook of Machining with Grinding Wheels is a clear illustration of how grinding has changed from a finishing operation into a process that is comparable to traditional machining methods. 
The change has been brought about by several factors including new abrasives, substantially greater material removal rates, better machine tool controls and understanding of processes, new and better grinding fluids, and other innovations. What's significant is the improved performance is an added benefit for applications calling for new materials such as composites, nickel or titanium-based materials. But grinding is not a technology without its problems. Proper use new technologies are necessary to avoid thermal damage,surface damage, chatter, wheel glazing, or rapid wheel wear.
Five authors collaborate on this work summarizing the knowledge drawn from research centers in Japan, the United States, Europe, and other countries. Showing the emphasis upon application, the book has two sections: Basic Processes and Applications. Notable is the details of superabrasives that have largely been missing in books over the last decade. Examples of new state-of-the-art technologies include dressers and dressing techniques, coolants and coolant applications, sensors and monitoring processes, and vibration and wheel dynamics.
Not since Francis Farago's Abrasives Methods went out of print in the 1990s have manufacturers had access to updated resources on used of centerless, ID, OD and cylindrical grinding. Machine tool design now plays an important role in grinding process and the authors provide chapters on important new machine tool designs and the unique aspects of centerless, ID and surface grinding methods. Illustrating how spindles play a key role in machine capabilities author discuss spindle designs and the types of products available on the market.

GRINDING STRESSES
What's the effects of fluids on residual stress in a workpiece?---A research paper from the 60s offers this: "For metals, at least, the workpiece apparently absorbs the surface heat so rapidly that any subsequent cooling by the fluid is of minor importance. Some research findings:
Stresses obtained with water solutions of rust inhibitor or miscible oils differ very little from those resulting from dry grinding.
Some reduction in magnitude of the peak tensile stresses is indicated by certain straight grinding oils.
Straight grinding oils are conducive to high compressive stresses very close to the surface.
The effectiveness of a grinding fluid, as far as residual stresses are concerned, depends upon its ability to reduce thermal and mechanical stresses during chip formation rather than upon its ability to carry heat away from the cutting zone after it has been generated. That is, in terms of the generally recognized functions of grinding fluids, lubrication is more important than cooling/"
