Zondervan launches Bible Across America tour, invites 31,173 Americans to handwrite NIV Bible. More than 31,000 Americans will have a hand in publishing a new NIV Bible—America’s NIV—the first NIV Bible ever written “one-verse, one-person” at a time.
Zondervan embarked Sept. 30 on a 90-city, 44-state cross-country tour, Bible Across America, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the New International Version (NIV) translation, enlisting the help of the American people to publish its next Bible. A team of four will drive a 42-foot luxury motor home, donated by RV supplier Spartan Motors, more than 15,000-miles, crisscrossing the United States over the next five months.
The Bible Across America tour will make scheduled stops at events, churches, universities, retail stores, American landmarks, and other venues to allow people of all ages and walks of life to write a verse in the Bible, which will then be published and sold nationwide. The tour kicked off at Zondervan headquarters in Grand Rapids, MI, and includes stops ranging from a NASCAR race in Charlotte, NC, to a young church leaders conference in Atlanta, to the National Pastor’s Convention in San Diego, as well as signing events in the heart of New York City and for legislators at the Capitol in Washington, DC. (Tour stops and real-time blog updates: www.BibleAcrossAmerica.com.)
Writers of America’s NIV will pen a single verse on actual thin-stock Bible paper. Each verse and each page will be published together as a complete America’s NIV Bible available in stores nationwide. The Bible will include an index of 31,173 contributors, one for every verse of the Bible. Zondervan plans to create two original editions. One original transcript of America’s NIV will be offered to the Smithsonian Institution and the second will be auctioned off to benefit the International Bible Society in support of their Bible translation and distribution efforts around the world.

PLI acquires CBA service provider PlastiCard+Plus. As of Sept. 1, 2008, PLI has acquired PlastiCard+Plus of Hendersonville, TN. The 10-year-old company is well-known within the gift and loyalty segment of the plastic-card business, with a specific focus on the Coffee and Casual Dining industries. The team and all assets of the company were acquired and the company now operates as a wholly owned division of PLI.
With this acquisition, CBA members now have access to a wider selection of products, greater customer services, a staff well-educated in gift and loyalty programs, and the same great member discounts.
“PlastiCard+Plus has really carved out a nice niche within the gift and loyalty segment of our business and brings real service to independent businesses and small to medium sized regional and national chains. It was an area we wanted to expand PLI’s business, so the acquisition simply made sense,” said Mark Goldberg president and CEO of PLI. “As a leading manufacturer of plastic cards, PLI will provide additional capabilities, resources, and manpower to assist PlastiCard+Plus with its service to its customers. Customers of PlastiCard+Plus will be able to enjoy factory direct pricing with unsurpassed personalized customer service,” added Goldberg.
“PlastiCard+Plus has enjoyed 10 years of growth within the gift and loyalty segment of the plastic-card industry, and we are very excited to come in and be able to build on the wonderful foundation the former owners and the team have built. Our goal for PlastiCard+Plus is simple. We want to become the leading provider of gift and loyalty cards to a broad array of industries while continuing to provide top-notch customer service,” said Peter Krauss, chief business development officer of PLI.
Established in 1988, PLI is the largest key card manufacturer and a leading manufacturer of all forms of plastic cards. Located in Asheville, NC, PLI operates out of a 64,000-square-foot state-of-the-art production facility, operates 24 hours a day, and is a member of the International Card Manufacturers Assoc.
Established in 1998, PlastiCard+Plus is a leading supplier of gift, loyalty cards, key tags, plastic signs, and point-of-purchase accessories. Operating out of Hendersonville, TN, PlastiCard+Plus provide sales and production support to its customers.
Send a birthday message to Billy Graham. Franklin Graham recently sent an open letter to brothers and sisters to send a birthday greeting to his father, Billy Graham:
“My father will turn 90 on November 7, and he’s been looking forward to reaching this milestone. There is something special we want to give him for his birthday, and I'm writing to ask for your help. We are inviting friends like you to send a birthday greeting or a personal message about how God may have used Billy Graham to influence your life and work.
“We’ve set up a special Web site, www.billygraham90.com, where you can submit a birthday message or personal story for my father. We’re looking for testimonies from people around the world of how they came to know Jesus Christ through my father’s ministry. We’ll assemble these messages and present them all to him as a birthday gift. I know he will be encouraged to see what God has done.
Would you consider joining us in this celebration? First, please send your own personal greeting by November 1. We will be honored to include it in the birthday presentation to my father.
“Second, you reach a large audience, and I’d welcome your assistance in spreading the word. Our special site, www.billygraham90.com, also has downloadable resources for you to share with others, including a bulletin insert, a PowerPoint slide, banner ads, and videos.
“I believe this celebration will bring praise to the Lord for all He has done. To God alone be the glory!
“Thank you for helping encourage my father on this special day. May God richly bless you.”
Standard donates books to Extreme Makeover family. A popular faith-based storybook almost lept from its pages into the second episode of this season’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition television series yesterday.
In the spirit of Crystal Bowman’s inspiring book, The House in the Middle of Town, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition traveled to the greater Cincinnati suburb of West Chester, OH, to bless Greg and Ginger Akers, parents of three children with special needs, two of whom are confined to wheelchairs.
Behind the scenes of the episode that taped in July, Standard Publishing joined in the blessing, donating a library of books to be placed on the bookshelves of the Akers’ new home. In an effort to thank those that made this possible, Standard Publishing also donated $20,000 in books and resources to the Akers’ church, the educators responsible for their nomination, and to volunteers working on the project.
“We were so moved by the community’s response that we wanted to participate in helping this very special family,” said Heather Gims, Standard marketing manager. “It was also incredible to have the opportunity to share The House in the Middle of Town. The story parallels perfectly with what the Akers family just experienced.”
“It’s great when the content of a book can come alive, and the Christian acts that it chronicles can be shared with the world,” added Larry Carpenter, Standard Publishing’s president.
To continue in the spirit of serving others, Standard Publishing will donate a portion of the sales of The House in the Middle of Town to local Habitat for Humanity projects.
